9:56 p.m. Paducah Tilghman may have wrapped this one up
In an offensive explosion for both teams, it looks like the Panthers' defense is going to win the day. Take a look at this clutch play that ended a would-be CAL scoring drive.
9:49 p.m. Let's give you an update
Trinity, St. X and Male are likely moving on...
And Bethlehem trounces KCD
9:14 p.m. The slugfest continues
Crossing the midway point of the third quarter, CAL and Paducah Tilghman are showing no signs of letting up in their blow-for-blow affair.
8:55 p.m. It's halftime at Lyle
Trinity's sitting with a fairly comfortable lead. Let's take a peak at the halftime stats.
And for Ryle...
8:35 p.m. More back and forth from CAL-Paducah Tilghman
This one might come down to which team has the ball last.
8:22 p.m. The 'Rocks are rollin'
If this postseason has done nothing else, it's certainly separated for us the three clear-cut best teams in Kentucky. Trinity belongs in that group.
8:17 p.m. Back and forth we go
Let's see if that botched extra point comes back to hurt them at the end.
As for No. 1 Male, North Hardin is absolutely no match. Which is basically the same thing we've been saying about every Bulldog opponent all year long. And No. 2 St. Xavier is doing its best impersonation of a second-ranked team in the state.
8:12 p.m. It's a first, but not necessarily a bad one
Trinity's defense hasn't allowed a single score in the entire postseason. That just changed here. But given the situation, it's still a win for the Shamrocks' D.
8:05 p.m. CAL punches back
It's a bit of a back-and-forth affair right now, but take a look at the play that put CAL back on top.
Meanwhile, specials teams comes through to knot things up between KCD and Bethlehem.
7:50 p.m. The best 5-win team in Kentucky...
Each week you ask yourself, "Is this the week the Trinity train gets halted in its tracks?" And each week, Trinity shows you why that's a silly thought, despite its 5-7 record coming into tonight's game. Let's remember the gauntlet regional schedule the Shamrocks had — the kind of schedule most teams in the state couldn't handle, and the kind that prepares them for the rigors of the postseason. All that to say, Trinity's on top.
7:38 p.m. CAL takes an early lead
Our Jonathan Saxon wrote a great story earlier in the week about how CAL head coach Hunter Cantwell was feeling a few nostalgia-produced butterflies about facing his high school alma mater. Safe to say that this early score has probably quelled some of that. It's all business now.
Meanwhile, it didn't take No. 2 St. X long to find the end zone in what many have said would be its stiffest challenge (besides Male, of course) all season.
7:22 p.m. Stop us if you've heard this one...
No. 1 Male is off to a fast start. Surprise, surprise. North Hardin gave them a bit of an assist though, starting the game with an onside kick attempt. The Bulldogs recovered, which meant ridiculously good field position at their own 46-yard line. That meant a short field for QB Nic Schutte and company, and when you give a juggernaut like Male a short field, well...
7:15 p.m. Games under way
It's just after 7 p.m. which means two kickoffs have already happened — North Hardin at top-ranked Male and the best 5-win team in the midwest (Trinity) at Ryle. Make sure you're following Jason Frakes (@kyhighs) and Jonathan Saxon (@TheSleepyScribe) on Twitter to keep up with all the action!
Meanwhile, our other three area tilts are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start. It's going to be a full night that'll bring us one step closer to crowning state titles, so settle in!
DeSales announces their next head coach
DeSales High School has hired a Louisville-area veteran as its next head football coach.
Mike Jackson was introduced as the Colts' new leader Monday during a news conference at the school. Jackson has spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Male.
Read more about why DeSales was Jackson's "Dream job."
Bullitt Central's Zach Shofner may be the best running back you've never heard of
The leading rusher in Kentucky high school football this season doesn't have a Division I scholarship offer, doesn't have 4.4-second 40-yard dash speed and doesn't have a highlight tape full of flashy runs.
But Bullitt Central High School senior running back Zach Shofner does have the respect of opposing coaches who have — unsuccessfully — tried to slow him down.
"It's like fighting a guy who only throws body blows until Round 8," Fairdale coach Louis Dover said. "He just literally takes your heart. He's a hell of a football player."
Shofner is a big reason the Cougars are 9-3 and have reached the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. Bullitt Central will travel to Owensboro (11-1) at 8 p.m. EST Friday in a Class 5A quarterfinal.
